What is the church of Christ?

Many have asked the question, “What is the church of Christ?” in view of its remarkable growth. Many people have a misconception or misunderstanding about the church of Christ. They have no idea who we are and what we are all about. We can prove that we are the church of the New Testament by comparing what we do to the mode, model, and blueprint of the New Testament.

    (1) The church was founded by Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:28; Matthew 16:18)
    (2) The church began in Jerusalem in 33 A.D. (Acts 2:31-41)
    (3) The church is organized by Elders or Bishops in Philippians 1:1. The Bible always discusses a plurality of Elders with Christ as the head of the church.
    (4) We are added to the church through the burial in baptism. (Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:27; 1 Peter 3:21)
    (5) The name of the church has been designated as the church of Christ (Romans 16:16). Matthew 16:18 says “On this rock, I will build my church…” The church is composed of saints, it is His church. The church that Jesus built is not ours to change. It was purchased by His blood.

Beware of Counterfeit Churches!

There are some churches that want us to believe that they are the real thing. We can apply the same pattern as we did concerning the church of Christ.

  • Is your church founded by Jesus Christ?

  • Is it organized by Elders or Bishops?

  • Is baptism the means for men and women to be saved?

  • Are men and women immersed or buried beneath the waters of baptism?

  • Does the name of your church signify that it is Christ’s church or does it wear the name of a man?

The Worship of the Church

The Bible tells us how he expects us to worship Him. John 4:24 teaches that we should “worship Him in Spirit and truth.” Our services are designed to be decent and in order (1 Corinthians 14:40). Each element of worship below is based on scripture:

    (1) Singing – The assembly of saints join their voices in singing “songs, hymns, and spiritual songs” (Ephesians 5:19)
    (2) Prayer – The congregation is led in prayer by one man. Our prayers include thankfulness and request for help from God who is the Giver and Provider of all things. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
    (3) Preaching – Lessons and sermons are intended to encourage submission by the audience. The Word is sharper than any two-edged sword and its application is “in season and out of season” (Hebrews 4:12; 2 Timothy 4:2)
    (4) The Lord’s Supper – Saints partake of the communion every first day of the week. (Acts 20:7) This memorial consists of unleavened bread and the fruit of the vine as the emblems of the precious body and blood of Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:20-36)
    (5) Giving as we Prosper – We take up collection on the first day of the week and it’s the privilege and responsibility of every Christian, not of our guests. (1 Corinthians 16:1,2)

What Must I Do To Be Saved?

In Acts 8, the Ethiopian Eunuch saw water and asked Philip what prevents him from being baptized. He saw the need to be baptized and to continue any further would prevent him from being saved. To be a part of the Lord's church, you must hear His word and accept it. (John 8:24) then your faith must be in God and believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God (Heb. 11:6) Next, one must repent of all sins and be willing to bury that old man of sin. You must then confess that Jesus is Christ, the son of God (Matt. 10:32; Rom. 10:9-10). After you have made your confession, you must be baptized for the remission of your sins into Christ (Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-4; I Peter 3:21; Acts 22:16). Only He can wash away your sins and be remember no more (Heb. 8:12).
